Prof. Dr.techn. Michael P. Wistuba

Welcome – nice to have you here.

The Transferzentrum Straßenwesen (TSW) is a competence center for the design, testing and simulation of asphalt pavements in traffic route construction. We cover a broad spectrum of material testing, methods of condition assessment and simulation with a focus on asphalt, bituminous binders (including bitumen emulsions, bituminous mastics/mortars), aggregates, layers without binders and soils.

As part of material studies, research projects and expert opinions, we are happy to support you, for example, in the product development and market launch of bituminous building materials, answering special questions in the context of construction projects (e.g. reuse of building materials), developing remediation proposals, determining the causes of damage, preserving evidence, developing test methods or calculating dimensions.

We provide you with a comprehensive selection of test methods in accordance with national and international regulations, particularly in the areas of asphalt for hot and cold paving (e.g. performance tests), bituminous binders (e.g. rheological tests, testing of bitumen emulsions, selection of modifiers and rejuvenators), rock (e.g. mechanical rock properties; binder-filler interaction) and road condition assessment (e.g. skid resistance, load-bearing capacity, longitudinal and transverse profile measurement).

Range of services (selection)

Static and cyclic-dynamic tests to address the rheological properties of bitumen and bituminous binders: Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), bending beam rheometer (BBR), creep behavior of bitumen and mortar.

Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) – Roads

Pressure Ageing Vessel (PAV), Rolling Thin Film Oven Test (RTFOT), Braunschweig aging (BSA), aging of asphalt

Needle penetration, softening point ring & ball, elastic recovery, flash point, breaking point according to Fraaß, force ductility

Rheological tests using a dynamic shear rheometer over the entire service temperature range (performance asphalt mastic), rolling bottle test, boiling test, strength reduction after water storage, shaking abrasion

Resistance to plastic deformation: tracking test, compression-swell test, triaxial test with radial pressure, dynamic punch penetration test Testing machine for cyclic asphalt testing Machine for testing cold properties Cold properties: uniaxial tensile test, cooling test, relaxation/retardation test, tensile-swell test Stiffness and fatigue properties: Tensile/compression swell test, tensile swell test, 4-point bend test, 3-point bend test, splitting tensile swell test Adhesive properties: Drop in splitting tensile strength, centric tensile test Surface properties: skid resistance pendulum device, flow meter, Wehner/Schulze/Freundl polishing device Production of asphalt mix and compaction properties: counter-rotating compulsory mixer with torque recording, twin-shaft compulsory mixer, rolling sector compaction device with force/displacement recording (sample plates up to 20 x 50 x 70 cm³), compaction resistance, impact compaction (Marshall compaction device) Twin-shaft compulsory mixer

Rock processing and testing:
Jaw crusher, grain size distribution, frost resistance, PSV (Polished-Stone-Value) tester, Los-Angeles trommel, Micro-Deval trommel, Wehner/Schulze/Freundl polisher

Substance assessment and condition testing of superstructure structures and layers:
